How to spot a sensible flight home
- One stop is the norm. Most flights home go through Dubai, Doha or Abu Dhabi. When we checked Christmas fares, the quickest one-stop options took about 21 to 25 hours each way.
- Watch the "cheapest" result. The cheapest Sydney to Dublin return we found for Christmas meant 80 hours of travel there and back, with 3 stops on the way out. Saving a few hundred dollars isn't worth nights in airports.
- Self-transfer means separate tickets. If your first flight is late, the next airline doesn't have to wait for you or rebook you.
- Check the bags. A cheap fare can get dear once you add a checked bag.
- Book direct with the airline where you can. It's much easier if you need to change anything.
